Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.
Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
