Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
